Land Clearing in Webb City & Carl Junction: Preparing Your Lot

The suburbs of Joplin—Webb City, Carl Junction, and Oronogo—are growing fast. We see new construction everywhere.
If you just bought a few acres of wooded land to build your dream home, you have a big job ahead of you: Land Clearing.
It’s not as simple as just bulldozing everything flat. Here is how to clear your lot intelligently.
1. Mark the "Keepers" First
Once a tree is gone, it takes 50 years to replace it. Before any heavy machinery shows up:
- Walk the lot with a can of orange spray paint.
- Mark the trees you want to save. Look for healthy Oaks, straight Walnuts, and mature Maples.
- Clear around them. We can use forestry mulchers to clear the underbrush while leaving your prize trees untouched.
2. Forestry Mulching vs. Bulldozing
For underbrush (briars, small cedars, poison ivy), Forestry Mulching is superior to bulldozing.
- No Burn Piles: The machine shreds the vegetation into a layer of mulch on the forest floor.
- Erosion Control: The mulch layer prevents rain from washing your topsoil away (which is a huge issue in Jasper County).
- Nutrients: The decomposing mulch feeds the remaining trees.
3. Clearing the Foundation Pad
For the actual footprint of your house and driveway, we need to go deeper.
- Stump Removal: You cannot build a foundation on top of tree stumps. They will rot and cause the slab to crack. We must dig out the root balls completely in the building zone.
- Grading: We rough grade the area to ensure water flows away from your future homesite.
4. Dealing with Cedars
Eastern Red Cedars are invasive in Missouri. They drink a ton of water and choke out grass.
- The Strategy: We usually recommend clearing almost all Cedars unless they are providing a specific privacy screen. They are fire hazards and harbor bagworms.
5. Permits
If you are disturbing more than 1 acre of land, you may need a land disturbance permit from the Missouri DNR or the local municipality to ensure silt doesn't run off into creeks.
